Wellington Silver Band Training Band

A little bit of Training Band history

Our training band has been around for a few years now and has been growing steadily form a beginners group started by the band's committee.

The band went into local schools giving demonstrations and a few children came forward to have lessons. As always, players come and go but the group has grown from strength to strength with new players of all ages joining over the past year or two.

It soon became apparent that adults were also interested in joining the group, both as beginners and as existing players wanting to re-ignite an old hobby or a school activity. This is something we are actively encouraging.

A vision for the future

What is always difficult is handling the variety of standards in a group such as this. As a band, we would like to see players develop and, if they want to, join the Senior Band.

To do this we need to raise the standard of the training band without discouraging new players as this should be a place where everyone can enjoy their music without any sense of pressure.

In order to achieve this we will be writing new pieces and rearranging existing ones so that there are parts for all levels. Also, members of the senior band will be joining in with the practices to support and encourage players to help them get the most from the sessions.

Can I play in the senior band as well?

Absolutely. Playing in the Senior Band is by invitation of the Musical Director. We have a number of players who come along to Training Band and then stay for the first half of Senior Band to improve their playing. We tend to keep the easier Senior Band pieces in the first half to help this transition. This is particularly useful for able children to enable them to develop as players.

When do you meet

Training Band meets from 6:30 - 7:30 on a Tuesday evening before Senior Band.

Beginners group

The success of the training band of late has produced a gap at the beginner end and we don't have many new players coming through. So, with an eye on the future, we are actively seeking new players, young and less-young.

Can anyone join?

We pride ourselves on being a friendly, community band so everyone is welcome.

What do I need?

You don't really need anything as we will provide the instrument and the tuition. That said, we only have so many instruments, so it is always, 'First come, first served'.

When do you meet

The beginners group will meet from 6:00 - 6:30 on a Tuesday evening before the Training Band and Senior Band.

What if I don't think I'm any good?

That will never be a problem. Come and enjoy playing whatever standard you are. As long as you commit to coming along on a regular basis you will always be welcome.

What do I do next?

Make contact. Please contact Davina, our membership secretary, in the first instance as she knows the availability of instruments.
